BLOG UNIVERSITY DISSERTATIONS AND HOW TO WRITE THEM     ACADEMIC    0 COMMENTS Written by Harry Croose " I write, because I don't know what I think, until I read what I say." - Flannery O'Connor - Tweet Hello all, I hope you are well today this is my sequel to the blog post 'University Dissertations and How To Plan Them' which you can check in the link below.  Today however, I am going to talk about the writing process, and how to essentially write well. :) Again these our general points, for some dissertations their could be slightly differences in requirements, depending on your chosen degree subject. I am hoping these points will be very helpful and insightful all the same, here are a few points. :) Remember that Good Writing takes as much planning as it does writing. :)  PREVIOUS BLOG POST ON DISSERTATIONS: 'University Dissertations and How to Plan Them' 1. Structure Before Starting Make sure that you know how your Dissertation, is going to be structured. Look at examples Dissertations from your University, and better yet your subject, e.g. History.  You will be able to see how they structure their Dissertation and this will give you a basis sturcutre to begin the writing process.  Structure also comes done to knowing the word count, and how to layout your essay. E.g. you could structured your essay knowing that your introduction is 2000 words, main body is 6000 and conclusion is 1000 words. This will give you a rough idea on how many paragraphs and points you will need to make to answer your questions.   2. Make a list of your quotes with References before drafting This is an important bit of advice, that helped me compile my references and sources, you can even do this with any appendix or list of tables that you may have. With this list of quotes (wether directly quoted or paraphrased).  You can decide which section each quote can go in, e.g. you can space out your quotations if you have 50 quotes (you could try and space out so that there is 10 quotes in each of your 5 sections);  of course this could change slightly depending on the sections but it would be a great way of establishing some word count before even starting to write.  This helps me write a first draft as you feel as though you already have some word count, and not a blank page. A metaphor I would use is 'dot to dot' these quotes help you join your arguments together, and thus it is easier to focus on your first draft.  3. Look up other Blog Posts and Advice on Creating a Dissertation There a loads of YouTubers and other blog posts as well as resources given to you by your Disseration Tutor and the Academic Team at your Univesity, to give you many tips and varations on writing style, if you watch enough of these videos or read enough blogs, you will…

BLOG 50 THINGS TO DO WHILE IN LOCKDOWN ALL       0 COMMENTS Written by Harry Croose "Lockup all your love and go and throw away the key." - Carrie Underwood - Tweet Hello, all hope you are well. Especially in these times, if you are reading in 2020, with the Coronavirus lockdown. :) I have had a few requests to write a blog post on things to do while in lockdown; luckily for you my fantastical followers, here it is. :)  Here is the long list, with an occasional elaboration, as to why I think they are possibly a great idea for you! :)I will say this however if you have to do something, limit your time watching the news and social media. Awareness is important, but an overstimulation of negative headlines can do more damage them people realise to their psychology. Also make sure that you have a routine, and that you have a variety of things to do, that you most of all enjoy, but also tasks that give you the satisfaction of working towards your goals and dreams. :)  - THE LONG LIST OF IDEAS OF THINGS TO DO -  PLAN YOUR DAY - Have a To-Do List or a Goals Journal so you have particular objectives to complete so you are not just wasting your time, apologises for the bluntness there, but you no deep down what I say has an element of truth to it, espcially if you don't have clear goals. I would recommend Google Calendar, to help with time blocking your days. DEDICATE A WORK PERIOD (per day) - Spend a few hours every day doing tasks wether that be for your Work, School or University. Just make some progress it doesn't matter how much. If you again plan far ahead, a few hours a day should be sufficent for you to get many of your tasks completed. READ BOOKS  - There are so MANY books, out there to read. :) Take advantage of Amazon (depsite the new delays), books are a testament to education and mental stimulation, that will certainly keep you entertained.Wether it be fiction or non-fiction, experimenting with different genres and authors is a fantastic idea.         LISTEN TO AUDIOBOOKS - Listening to Audiobooks, (especially from Audible), again it is amazing, and books can be obtained instantly, and can be listened to via the app. I would personally recommend The Game of Thrones Series and Harry Potter Collection for those who like fantasy. You would find thousands of books, from different genres all at very affordable prices at the moment during lockdown. WATCHING YOUTUBE - You must have a YouTube account surely, listening/watching some of your favourite YouTubers for surely give you a laugh, education or whatever you are in to! PLAYING VIDEO GAMES - Wether that be on your Xbox One, Xbox 360, WiiU, and Nintendo 3DS etc. There must be plenty of games you haven't played or haven;t visited in a long time, perhaps you should…

BLOG UNIVERSITY DISSERTATIONS AND HOW TO PLAN THEM ACADEMIC   0 COMMENTS Written by Harry Croose "What is not started will never get finished." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - Tweet Hey, all hope you are well in your corners of the world. Today, I would love to discuss University Dissertations, and to elaborate on a few tips I have had in planning my dissertation.  I personally as of early February 2020, has just completed my poster for my Dissertation; I was very privileged to have had the prasie I had, as I decided to draw mine rather than to print it off on the computer. :) But anyway I digress slightly he our the wonderful tips I have for any of you  who have the fortune or depending on how you look at misfortune of creating a Dissertation Poster for your chosen course. :)  1. Decide on a General Idea This one I know is quite self-explanatory, but in order for you to write a great dissertation. You first need to have a few ideas on what you would like to write it on; the key word is 'like' here.  It will be SO much EASIER if you write your disseration being 9000 words or so, if you are VERY PASSIONATE about your CHOSEN SUBJECT. It will MOTIVATE you to WRITE a lot more and your future self will thank you so much for it. :)  2. Decide on a few of your Main 'Texts' Once you have decided on a thesis idea, try and branch out and find some appropriate main source texts that you may use throughout your Dissertation. Also noted down any theories or viewpoints that you for one personally like, and also any opposing arguments that you can use to cross reference depending on the style of your essay. Once you have a rough foundation on what your argument is you can then cultivate your methodologies for secondary sources and further texts.  This will also save you a bit of time and will give you an idea wether the topic you chosen is the right one for you.  3. Look at Sample Dissertation Layouts and Structures If you look at example Dissertations and the way they are academically presented, this will save you SO much time when you are planning thew way you structure your Dissertation. There are some sample disserations online that you can download and if you wanted to you could copy and paste layout to give you a nice template and then you can modify the structure to meet your Dissertation plan accordingly. You can thank me later. The hardest part is getting started once you have a clear structure in place it will be so much easier to write it and to block each session for time-management.  4. Make your own Theory or Observation As you read through more of your texts and content, you could potentially form your own perspective, theory or opinion, this could merit even more marks, as you…

BLOG 5 TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE ESSAY PLANNING ACADEMIC 0 COMMENTS Written by Harry Croose "Write like it matters; and it will." - Libba Bray - Tweet Hey all, I hope you are well. Today, we will be talking about the importance of preparing and planning your academic essays. At the time, I am writing this - I have just completed my second year. Over my time at University I have become very adept in time management and planning for  essays. Here is 5 tips to help you become better at planning for essays, and in turn it may skyrocket your grades.  1. Write the Assignments due-in dates (a day before they are due) This one in itself has allowed me to do so much better! Many of us, if we are truly honest with ourselves to do like to write essays quite close to the deadline. But this in turn due to the stress of time, has made our essay writing and content, not our best standard. Setting a mindset to complete the essay as if the day before was the assignment due date. Gives you the necessary breathing room to give you time to proof-read and can cure procrastination, and last-minute essay writing.  This has worked wonders and has made my essays better because it improves your psychological wellbeing - during the writing process.  2. Analysis the question / Assessment Criteria Analysing the question is a great way of articulating a framework not just for your essay but for your understanding of the actual question.   The assessment criteria with giving you much more specific insight, into what the lecturer wants to be included in your essays.  Try to touch upon all of these points, and perhaps use similar words, to make sure you are hitting each of the points.  So for example, if the essay question was... 'To what extent is apples awesome in England.' You can take into consideration 'to what extent' meaning you could structure the essay into good and bad representations of apples, and go into if your sources have a particular bias, so on and so forth.  'Awesome' what do you as an emrging academic, deem as an awesome representation of apples.  Also what 'apples', are you going to foucs on a particular type of apple, or are you going to look at apples in literature, again it dependa on what subject and what your assessment criteria is.  A long story, short with that crazy example, you do have free-realm with how you wirite the essay and create and formulate the ideas. But remember, it will be marked on how it meets the question as well as the assessment criteria.  3. Use Secondary Sources Secondary sources are incredibly important because it gives the impression that you have read widely to the lecturer. Also including other academics names to assist your argument, makes your own conclusions and own individual theory much more creditable.  Also, reading up on these individuals can help you in future essays, by…

4 Steps to Dealing with Haters

BLOG 4 STEPS TO DEALING WITH HATERS Written by Harry Croose "Hating on someone, or something is only giving power to that thing. It becomes a bigger problem in your mind. It's okay to dislike something, but never hate it - you only lose your power and time." - Harry Croose - Tweet 1. Accepting that Haters are everywhere. Basically, if you are a hater why are you here. To plot your revenge, to comment under one of my blog posts or YouTube Videos because I upset you; or are you here to eat my chocolate cheesecake because the last one is definitely crossing the line.  Also hyperlinks can be very useful. 2. Understand why they Hate There was a time where I actually paid attention to these individuals who sit down in life and have nothing better to do than complain and shout at you for doing 'the wrong thing' or 'that you are weird' . Well here is a reality check for those of you that are haters of my work, look at yourself. What are you doing and contributing to the world? You can't say anything to me or too anyone at that if you are not following your own path and are merely following the masses, because you are still scared that you might fail. 3. Re-frame the situation. I don't hate you if you are a hater, I respect that you have an opinion; but to waste your precious time on this earth which as you read this (by the way I appreciate) you will loses this seconds forever. Instead of complaining or being a victim 100% of the time, harness your energy to things that could actually change your life. Direct your energy away from your haters and invest it into yourself  Understand that it isn't about you, it is about them. 4. Maintain distance to your haters. There was a time where I was a hater of people who seemed to have it better than me, but when I started to stop comparing myself to others. I felt so much more free and had a tenfold more time and energy to make the impact I want to make on the world. I am not giving up not now, I will never give up. I am not stopping just because my crush no longer likes me, I am not stopping because I haven't got 50 likes on YouTube or 1000 subscribers I am going to keep pushing ahead; we must together keep pushing forward that is the only way we will truly reach the land we were promised off when we were read a bedtime story with a nice cup of hot chocolate. Dreams can come true, and no matter where you are in life or how far you think your behind; you can make it. I believe in you. Lovers always Win.  SHARE THIS Share on facebook Facebook Share on google Google+ Share on twitter Twitter Share on linkedin LinkedIn Share on pinterest Pinterest Subscribe to…
